Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) opens crypto division in London

By Editorial Office CVJ.CH on 12. June 2023 News

The renowned venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz has been supporting technology startups from its headquarters in California for over a decade. Due to the crypto-hostile stance of US regulatory authorities, a16z is now establishing its first office outside of the United States in London.

Andreessen Horowitz, also known as a16z, is a prestigious venture capital company that invests in tech startups and helps them build successful businesses by providing capital, guidance, and network resources. Notable successes of the investor include early investments in companies such as Airbnb, Skype, Robinhood, and Slack. In 2013, a16z made its first Bitcoin investment, which led to various startup financings in the crypto sector in the following years. As stated in a public statement by General Partner Chris Dixon, Andreessen Horowitz is now shifting a significant portion of its digital asset activities to London.

More political will in the United Kingdom

The venture capital firm's move follows the regulators' crackdown in the United States, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) taking legal action against major players in the field. The hostile attitude towards the crypto industry is evident from public statements made by the authorities. Andreessen Horowitz expects to obtain the necessary legal clarity more quickly in the United Kingdom. According to Dixon, the company's executives have been in discussions with British decision-makers, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, for over six months. The approach of these leaders is considered promising by the venture capital firm.

"What's happening with the Biden administration is basically an attempt to kill the technology. [In contrast, the United Kingdom] has all the ingredients you would want for an emerging technology hub." - a16z General Partner Chris Dixon in an interview with Fortune

The crypto office in London is set to be established this year and will be led by Andreessen Horowitz General Partner Sriram Krishnan. While the prospects for cryptocurrencies in the United States are diminishing, authorities in the United Kingdom have been working on a guidance for crypto activities since December last year. The crypto-friendly attitude of the current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reinforces this approach, according to the venture capital firm. However, despite the expansion, a16z remains an American company, and the regulatory discussion will simply take longer than overseas.
