New York City Mayor wants crypto taught in schools

By CVJ.CH Content Partner BeInCrypto on 11. November 2021 News

New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams said he would like blockchain technology and crypto to be taught in the city’s schools during a recent interview. According to him, Bitcoin is a new way to pay for goods and services that's here to stay.

After coming out in favour of cryptocurrencies following his electoral victory last week, Adams said he had been stopped on the street by young people curious about Bitcoin. Prompted by the CNN host, he explained that Bitcoin is a new way of paying for goods and services throughout the entire globe. His goal is to open schools to teach the technology and "teach this new way of thinking when it comes down to paying for goods and services.”

When asked about criticism towards his approach to cryptocurrencies, Adam admitted to having lost a great deal of money as part of his pension during the financial crisis. He called volatility part of some of the investments that people make. Ultimately the future Mayor said he wants to make sure New York City becomes a centre for innovation, no matter what that innovation is.

Earlier during the weekend, Adams said he wanted to explore ways that would allow New Yorkers to be paid directly in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Adams also reiterated a pledge he made last week to take his first three paychecks in bitcoin. The vow came after Miami Mayor Francis Suarez had said that he would take his next paycheck in bitcoin.

In New York we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in Bitcoin when I become mayor. NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!

    — Eric Adams (@ericadamsfornyc) November 4, 2021

Adams explained that he would have to convert his dollar paycheck into bitcoin, as there’s currently no way for him to receive payment directly. However, he said he would like to examine ways to enable direct Bitcoin payments, so New Yorkers have a choice of how they want to receive their paychecks.
