    Meebits

By Editorial Office CVJ.CH on 12. December 2023 Glossary

Meebits is an Ethereum NFT collection of 3D digital avatars. Originally developed by Larva Labs, the creators of the famous CryptoPunks, the 9,000 available Meebits out of the 20,000 Meebits collection sold for approximately 22,500 ETH (then valued at 75 million USD) within eight hours. The remaining 11,000 NFTs were distributed to the owners of CryptoPunks and Bored Apes.

The NFTs are algorithmically generated 3D characters rendered in voxels and feature a "metaverse-ready" design that sets them apart from other collections. A standard ERC-721 contract is used for the NFTs, which makes them compatible with all major Ethereum based marketplaces.

    Evolution of the Meebits collection

In March 2022, Yuga Labs acquired the NFT project. With the change of ownership, Yuga Labs granted all owners full IP rights to the respective images of the NFTs. Two months after the acquisition by Yuga Labs, the Meebits community established a decentralised, autonomous organisation called MeebitsDAO. This community-driven initiative aims to create a cross-platform metaverse for Meebits avatars to foster collaboration and engagement.

Some big news to share today: Yuga has acquired the CryptoPunks and Meebits collections from @LarvaLabs, and the first thing we’re doing is giving full commercial rights to the NFT holders. Just like we did for BAYC and MAYC owners. pic.twitter.com/lAIKKvoEDj

To date, Meebits has established key partnerships with the Metaverse platform Sandbox, where they can be used as playable characters. The project has also collaborated with WarpSound, expanding its presence beyond visual art with the release of a music album. In addition, in October 2023, Meebits made its first appearance in Yuga Labs' Metaverse "Otherside", featuring optimised graphics and a user experience tailored to the Metaverse.
