    Snapshot

By Redaktion cvj.ch on 12. November 2025 Glossary

Transparency plays a crucial role in the blockchain world. To ensure that rewards, voting rights, or new tokens are distributed fairly, projects often rely on a proven tool: the snapshot. But what exactly does this term mean, and why is it so important?

A snapshot is a record of the blockchain at a specific point in time. It captures all wallets and their token balances, creating an immutable record that allows projects to make decisions based on a neutral and verifiable foundation. One of the most common uses of snapshots is for airdrops: anyone holding the required tokens at the moment of the snapshot automatically receives new tokens.

    Practical applications

Beyond airdrops, snapshots also play a central role in governance. Many DeFi and DAO projects use them to assign voting rights. The number of tokens a user holds at the time of the snapshot typically determines their voting power. Snapshots are also essential in the case of hard forks, ensuring that token balances are accurately transferred to the new blockchain. A well-known example is the split of Ethereum Classic following the DAO hack in 2016, where a snapshot determined the token distribution on the new chain.

Technically, a snapshot occurs when the blockchain network is “frozen” at a specific block or timestamp. All token balances and relevant account data are stored. Developers can then automatically distribute rewards or activate governance rights without requiring manual action from users. This approach minimizes errors and increases efficiency, allowing large sets of wallet data to be processed simultaneously.

Snapshots create trust and fairness within the blockchain economy. They allow projects to define clear, transparent rules for distributing rewards, rights, or new tokens — rules that can always be verified. As such, snapshots are an indispensable tool for airdrops, governance, and forks, and they will continue to play a key role in the crypto infrastructure of the future.
