    FTX war eine der bedeutendsten Krypto-Börsen der Welt. Innerhalb von nur drei Jahren entwickelte sie sich vom Startup zur globalen Handelsplattform mit Milliardenbewertung. Der Zusammenbruch im November 2022 gilt bis heute als eines der grössten Finanzdesaster und veränderte regulatorische Perspektiven weltweit.

    FTX bot Derivate, Spot-Handel, Tokenisierung, Staking-Produkte und institutionelle Dienstleistungen. Die Börse wuchs rasant durch aggressives Marketing, prominente Investoren und riskante interne Strukturen – die letztlich zu ihrer Insolvenz führten.

    Frühphase und Wachstum

    Die Krypto-Börse FTX wurde 2019 von Sam Bankman-Fried und Gary Wang gegründet. Die Plattform gewann schnell Marktanteile, insbesondere im Futures- und Perpetual-Handel. Durch Cross-Margining, flexible Sicherheitenmodelle und hohe Liquidität konnte FTX Trader anziehen, die komplexe Strategien verfolgten. Das Unternehmen sicherte in mehreren Finanzierungsrunden Milliardenkapital und erreichte 2021 eine Bewertung von über 30 Mrd. USD. Sponsorings mit Sportligen, Blockbuster-Werbungen und Unternehmensübernahmen verstärkten das Wachstum.

    Kernproblem war die Nähe zu Alameda Research – einem Handelsfonds unter Kontrolle der FTX-Führung. Kundengelder wurden über interne Mechanismen genutzt, um Handelspositionen zu finanzieren, Verluste zu decken und Sicherheiten bereitzustellen. FTT – der hauseigene Token – diente dabei als Beleihungswert und Sicherung. Diese Konstruktion hing von Marktnachfrage und Liquidität ab: Wenn der FTT-Preis fiel, kollabierte der Sicherheitenmechanismus.

    Der Kollaps im November 2022

    Ein öffentliches Bilanzleck im November 2022 löste Misstrauen aus. Ein massiver Abzug von Kundengeldern folgte. FTX verlor Liquidität, konnte Auszahlungen nicht mehr bedienen und meldete Konkurs an. Milliarden an Kundeneinlagen waren verschoben oder nicht mehr nachvollziehbar. Die Übernahme durch Insolvenzverwalter offenbarte gravierende Mängel: fehlende interne Kontrollen, unzureichende Buchführung, Vermischung von Unternehmens- und Kundengeldern sowie Entscheidungsprozesse ohne Governance.

    Nach der Insolvenz begann eine internationale Ermittlungswelle. Sam Bankman-Fried wurde angeklagt und später in mehreren Punkten verurteilt, darunter Betrug und Verschwörung. Führungskräfte wie Caroline Ellison und Gary Wang kooperierten mit den Behörden. Der Fall wurde zu einem juristischen Präzedenzbeispiel für Missmanagement und unregulierte Finanzstrukturen im Krypto-Bereich.

    Der FTX-Kollaps führte zu regulatorischen Schocks. Börsen weltweit mussten Proof-of-Reserves-Systeme einführen, klare Trennung von Kundengeldern dokumentieren und Risikomanagementprozesse offenlegen. Investoren, sowohl institutionell als auch privat, bewerten seither Plattformen stärker nach Compliance, Bilanzqualität und Verwahrung. FTX markiert damit den Punkt, an dem Wachstumsnarrative dem Anspruch auf reale Governance weichen mussten.
